Polymeric DABCO-Bromine Complex for Oxidation of Alcohols

Significance

A polymeric DABCO-bromine complex for oxidation of secondary alcohols has been developed. The DABCO-bromine complex was prepared from Br2 and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) in CCl4. The oxidation of secondary alcohols was carried out in biphasic CH2Cl2-H2O in the presence of the polymeric DABCO-bromine complex to give the corresponding ketones in 84-97% yield (7 examples). The DABCO-bromine complex is selective for the oxidation of secondary alcohols over primary alcohols.
