Significance

This Lewis acid catalyzed process generates aza-spirocyclic compounds with high efficiency. Importantly, a wide variety of functional groups are tolerated, and both 5,5- and 5,6-fused ring systems can be synthesized. These products are of interest due to their potential biological activities.
