Significance

A bifunctional catalyst of acidic montmorillonite-immobilized primary amines (H-mont-NH2) was prepared by treating H-mont with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in heptane. The reaction of benzaldehyde dimethylacetal (1) with ethyl cyanoacetate (2) was catalyzed by H-mont-NH2 to give the condensation product 3 in 95% yield.
