Disulfiram and relapse-prevention in alcohol addiction
Due to recent findings, the effects of disulfiram for relapse-prevention in alcohol addiction exceed the sole psychological and aversive effect oft he disulfiram-ethanol-reaction. Studies could demonstrate that relevant effects are generated via a modulation of the ADLH-activity and central nervous DBH activity. In this context the dose-dependence of the therapeutic outcome could be explained. Though studies in addiction medicine are still lacking, trials in oncology found a positive impact of disulfiram on the growth of cancer cells. These effects are suggested to be due to RNA-demethylating effects of this substance which maybe has been outsourced as old-fashioned too early.
