Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols with Carbon-Supported Pt Catalyst

Significance

Platinum nanoparticles embedded in the porous wall of a hollow carbon shell (nPt@hC) catalyzed the aerobic oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols in water to afford the corresponding carbonyl products with 42-99% conversion (5 examples). In the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol, the catalyst was reused twice without significant loss of catalytic activity (76% conversions for 1st and 2nd reuse runs).
