Significance

This and the following (T. Hama, J. F. Hartwig Org. Lett. 2008, 10, 1549) publications describe a simple, robust and versatile procedure for the Pd-catalyzed α-arylation of various esters correspondingly with aryl bromides and chlorides. A fairly general and highly active catalyst, a Pd-t-Bu3P complex, has been discovered. As little as 0.04 mol% of the catalyst is sufficient for some processes. Besides, an improved protocol for the cross-coupling of Reformatsky reagents with aryl chlorides is reported.
