Significance

This is a new interesting approach for the construction of complex hydrocarbon frameworks. Synthetically it allows the connection of two different electrophiles by a single carbon atom. Bis(iodozincio)methane or -ethane serves here as an equivalent of the CH2 2- synthon, which can react subsequently with two different electrophiles. For both steps, the optimal conditions and catalysts were found. The starting reagent, IZnCH2ZnI, can be easily prepared by the reaction between diiodomethane and zinc metal.
