The sequential ligand 8 with ambident chelating units is prepared by deprotonation of 5,5’-dimethyl 2,2’-bipyridine (6) followed by addition of 2,3-dimethoxybenzyl bromide (2). Coordination of 8 to Fe(II) ions results in a mixture of two isomeric compounds mer/fac-12 where bonding occurs by interaction of the metal with the bipyridine units. On the other hand, Ti(IV) selectively binds to the oxygen donor of 8 forming complex 13.
