Tetra[1-(O-ethylphosphatobutyl)]zinc phthalocyanine tetrasodium salt 4 was synthesized from 4-nitro-1,2-dicyanobenzene in six steps. The potential of 4 as a sensitizer for photodynamic cancer therapy was demonstrated in a mouse tumor model.
