High regiochemical control has been achieved in the organoaluminum-promoted [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of unsymmetrical fumarates based on the discrimination of two different fumarate carbonyls by selective complexation with exceptionally bulky methylaluminum bis(2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxide).
