4,7-Dialkylated-1,10-phenanthrolines 3a-f and 4c-d have been synthesized in high yields from 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline and 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1, 10-phenanthroline, respectively, via lithiation followed by alkylation. These substituted phenanthrolines form complexes with lithium, and salts with proton acids, containing unusual ligand: cation ratios.
