The methylenation of alkenes with diphenylsulfonium methylide gives higher yields of cyclopropanes in the presence of a new copper catalyst, copper(II) 3-pentylacetylacetonate. An efficient synthesis of diphenylsulfonium methoxycarbonylmethylide, prepared from diphenylsulfonium methylide and methyl chloroformate, is described. This converts alkenes into cyclopropanecarboxylic esters.
