Vitamin E (α-tocopherol) (5) has been prepared efficiently from phytol (7). The key step is the treatment of (2S,3R,7R, 11R)-1-chloro-2,3-epoxy-3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecane, derived from phytol by sequential Sharpless epoxidation and chlorination, with butyllithium to give (3R,7R,11R)- 3,7, 11,15-tetramethyl-1-hexadecyn-3-ol (6).
