Treatment of octaethylporphyrin (OEP) with N-bromosuccinimide and 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile affords a variety of useful ethyl side-chain substituted products. The major product is the (2-bromovinyl)-OEP, and numerous subsequent reactions of this are described.
