Mixtures of enantiomers or diastereoisomers in which one isomer preponderates usually result from reactions in an asymmetric environment where trigonal carbon atoms are converted into asymmetric tetrahedral carbon atoms. The synthetic utility of such reactions is discussed in cases where enantiomers are formed directly and also where the new asymmetric centre can be detached easily from a diastereoisomeric framework.
