Pharmacological and Chemical Characteristics of Peanut Extracts Effective in Hemostasis

Summary

Parasympathomimetic activity is exerted by fractions of alcoholic extract of defatted peanuts previously reported effective in hemostasis. The acetylcholine-like effects on isolated tissues may be enhanced by eserine and blocked by atropine. The activity is destroyed by fresh plasma. From studies on active crystalline products obtained by treating the peanut extracts with ammonium reineckate and with potassium triiodide, we conclude that we are working with a mixture of two substances - choline and an ester of choline. We suggest that clinical improvement afforded hemophiliacs by consumptions of defatted peanuts (or extracts thereof) may be attributable to choline.
