Variation in ADP-Induced Platelet Aggregation in Vitro in Primates as a Result of Differences in Plasma ADP Inhibitor Levels

Summary

ADP-induced platelet aggregation and its reversal has been studied in platelet rich plasma of 25 non-human primates of 10 different species under standardised conditions. A wide variation in response to ADP in monkeys of different species has been found. A method is described for measuring ADP-splitting enzymes in plasma and using this method, a correlation has been found between reversal of ADP induced platelet aggregation and high levels of plasma ADP inhibitor. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis that variation in response to ADP of platelet-rich plasma is a result of differences in levels of plasma ADP-splitting enzymes.
