Dauerhafte Probleme, eine für einen befriedigenden Geschlechtsverkehr ausreichende Erektion zu erlangen oder aufrecht zu erhalten (Erektile Dysfunktion, F52.2, ICD-10), können die Lebensqualität der Betroffenen stark beeinträchtigen. Die erektile Dysfunktion ist darüber hinaus ein Indikator für die endotheliale Dysfunktion und kardiovaskuläre Erkrankungen. Ähnliches gilt für schlafbezogene Atmungsstörungen, die auf neurogener, hormoneller und endothelialer Ebene zur erektilen Dysfunktion beitragen können.
