Significance

Considerable effort has been put forth recently towards the synthesis of α-chiral phosphorus-containing compounds (M. Shibasaki et al. Tetrahedron Lett. 1999, 40, 2565; C.-H. Tan et al. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 7387). In this work the authors utilize a BINOL-derived magnesium phosphate catalyst. The magnesium is thought to be significant in the reactivity and stereoinduction since lower yield and ee is observed with a phosphoric acid catalyst obtained after acidic purification.
