Significance

The first synthesis of a nonacene derivative is reported, the longest acene in the past having been a heptacene. The specific substitution pattern with arylthio and aryl substituents was calculated to lower the total spin of the system and thus its reactivity towards oxygen. Compound 1b is persistent enough to be characterized by NMR, MS, UV/Vis/NIR and fluorescence spectroscopy.
