A PHARMACOGNOSTICAL STUDY OF SOLANUM BURBANKII BITTER

Summary

  1. Solarium burbankii was recently introduced by the authors for the first time into Egypt and grew well in E.S.M.P.

  2. Both the macro– and micromorphological characters of the plant were elucidated.

  3. The immature fruits were found to contain a considerable amount of the gluco–alkaloids (up to 2.4 %) while the other organs are either poor or devoid of these principles.

  4. The gluco–alkaloids present in the fruits are solasonine and solamargine. No free aglycone could be detected in the plant. This was achieved by the use of paper, thin–layer and column chromatography.

Zusammenfassung

Solanum burbankii, aus Nordamerika stammend, von einigen Autoren als Bastard zwischen S. nigrum und S. villosum angesehen, läßt sich in der UAR erfolgreich kultivieren. Neben einer pharmakognostisch–anatomischen Beschreibung wurden die einzelnen Organe auf das Vorkommen von Glukoalkaloiden untersucht, die nur in unreifen Früchten in größerer Menge vorkommen.
