Summary

It is reported on the first flexible bronchoscopes. After a short presentation of their technical development it is dealt with the examination technique. The best way to insert the bronchoscopes is by intratracheal tubus in local anesthesia, thus the patient does not have the uncomfortable sensation of a rigid tube. Regarding bronchoscopy in general anesthesia the flexible bronchoscope can be inserted by the rigid tube.
