Abstract

Calcitonin stimulates renal excretion of 35S-sulphate in the rat in addition to lowering the serum 35S-sulphate level. The urinary response to calcitonin is abolished by removal of the parathyroid glands. An elevated serum phosphorus level does not prevent the kidney excreting sulphate in response to the calcitonin stimulus. Parathyroid hormone when administered to a parathyroidectomized rat causes an elevated serum sulphate level with a decreased renal excretion of sulphate. Distribution of sulphate in tissues is also altered in the presence of either of these two hormones.
