Polymer-Supported Ruthenium Catalyst for Carbenoid Transfer Reactions

Significance

A soluble polymer-supported ruthenium nanoparticle catalyst (NCPS-Ru 1) was prepared from [RuCl2(PhCO2Et)]2 (0.1 g) and non-cross-linked polystyrene (NCPS) (0.5 g). The catalyst was used in the intramolecular carbenoid C-H insertion reaction of α-diazoacetamides. Thus, the C-H insertion reaction of α-diazoacetamides 5a-c (1 mmol) was carried out in toluene with NCPS-Ru 1 (1 mol%) to give the corresponding cis-β-lactams 6a-c (90-98%, 3 examples). Catalyst 1 was readily recovered and reused ten times without loss of activity (1st use: 97%, 10th use: 94%).
