Significance

The authors report an enantioselective aza-Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction catalyzed by a combination of β-isocupreidine­derived bifunctional catalyst 1 and β-naphthol. Various aromatic and aliphatic N-(p-methoxybenzenesulfonyl)imines were successfully converted with β-naphthylacrylate to give the desired MBH products in moderate to good yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to er = 99:1).
