Significance

An expedient method for the hydrochlorination of unactivated olefins has been developed. In this reaction, cheap and readily available tosyl chloride acts as chlorine source and is transferred to the respective terminal olefin via cobalt catalysis. In all reactions the Markovnikov products were obtained regiospecifically.
