Significance

Debenzylation of aryl benzyl ethers by a heterogeneous silica gel supported sodium hydrogen sulfate (NaHSO4˙SiO2) is described. Thus, various aryl benzyl ethers 1 (1 mmol) were treated with NaHSO4˙SiO2 (500 mg) in thiophene or anisole to give the corresponding debenzylated phenols 2 in 52-96% yields (12 examples).
