Significance

Preparation of Rh nanoparticles within the mesopores of aluminosilicates (H- or Na-) AISBA-15 and their catalytic application to hydrogenation of arenes are reported. Thus, Rh(0)-AISBA 1-3 were prepared from H-AISBA-15 or Na-AISBA-15 via treatment with N,N-dimethyl-N-acetyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium chloride (HEA16Cl) and RhCl3˙×H2O followed by reduction with NaBH4. Rh(0)-AISBA 4 was prepared without HEA16Cl. The hydrogenation of styrene (5) was carried out with Rh(0)-AISBA to give ethylcyclohexane (7). The hydrogenation of anisole, toluene, m-xylene and tetralin was performed with Rh(0)-AISBA 2 under the similar conditions to give the corresponding fully hydrogenated products in 32-100% yield.
