Significance

A Pd-catalyzed cleavage of alkynes with molecular oxygen in various alcohols leading to the corresponding carboxylic esters has been realized. ZnCl2 ·2H2O was hereby found to be the most suitable Lewis acid for promoting the cleavage. The reaction was successfully applied to both symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted alkynes.
