Significance

An elegant method for the direct one-pot construction of both symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted diaryl alkynes is reported. Hereby, propiolic acid is sequentially subjected to Sonogashira and decarboxylative coupling. No copper salt or base is needed as additive and both coupling reactions are mediated by the same Pd catalyst system. This method also represents a rare example of a decarboxylative coupling between an sp and an sp2 carbon.
