Significance

Direct coupling of C-H bonds has recently attracted a lot of attention, as in many cases it is more useful to synthetic chemistry than traditional coupling of halides. Herein, an elegant Pd-catalyzed arylation of arenes and heteroarenes via C-H activation is described. This method allows a simple direct and regioselective introduction of an arene into activated positions of electron-rich aromatic rings. Cheap and environmentally benign oxygen is used as the reoxidant for Pd.
