Significance

Various 2-aryl-5-styrylphospholes were synthesized in three steps from hepta-1,6-diyne. The absorption and emission characteristics of such phospholes were demonstrated to be strongly dependent on the nature of the terminal functionalities, with an observed variation of approximately 30 nm and 100 nm in the absorption and emission maxima, respectively. The first molecular hyperpolarizabilities (β) of compounds 3a and 3b were found to be 7.5 and 12 times larger than that of p-nitroaniline, which is a standard non-linear optic (NLO) chromophore.
