Significance
The myxobacterium Archangium gephyra produces archazolid A, which displays potent growth inhibitory effects against a variety of human cancers owing to its selective inhibition of vacuolar ATPases. The most noteworthy step in the synthesis is the Heck reaction used to conjoin fragments B and C. Preparatively useful selectivity (E/Z = 6:1) was obtained after evaluating a range of catalysts, additives, and solvents.
