Significance

Over the past few years, the catalytic asymmetric Friedel-Crafts reaction has attracted great interest. In particular, its use in the synthesis of chiral aromatic hydroxy(trifluoromethyl) ethyl esters have been studied because of the possible biological properties of those compounds (W. Zhuang, N. Gathergood, R. G. Hazell, K. A. Jørgensen J. Org. Chem. 2001, 66, 1009-1013). In the present article, the authors report on ligand-free conditions to reach high yields and enantioselectivities.
