Abstract

In patients suffering from cancer, pain is the most prevalent symptom and often indicates a progression of the disease. Following some basic principles in most patients sufficient pain relief can be achieved. After determination of the pain diagnosis the treatment should be conducted according to the WHO pain guidelines. Drug intervals should consider the duration of the drug effect. Prophylaxis of possible side effects is a further cornerstone of a successful treatment. The following article will provide an overview on principles and new developments of cancer pain management.
