Significance

Using a Ru(II)/BINOL-derived diphosphonite catalyst system, several β-keto esters were enantioselectively hydrogenated to the corresponding β-hydroxy esters with excellent yields and ee values. The catalyst was also used for the dynamic kinetic resolution of a cyclic β-keto ester to yield a single diastereomer, but was unsuccessful in doing so for an acyclic case.
