Significance

Recent advances in asymmetric hydrogenation have shown almost perfect enantioselectivities on a wide range of substrates even with simple olefins. Previously reported N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with iridium (by Burgess and co-workers) have inspired others to increase the performance of the reaction to the most active P,N-ligands.
