Significance

Polymer-supported N-heterocyclic carbene-palladium complex 1 was found to promote the Heck reaction of aryl iodides with alkenes under heterogeneous conditions. The Heck reaction of a variety of aryl iodides with butyl acrylate and styrene took place in the presence of of polystyrene-divinylbenzene-supported N-heterocyclic carbene-palladium complex 1 and tributylamine in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) to give the Heck products in 70-95% yield. Catalyst 1 was readily recovered by filtration and reused without significant loss of catalytic activity (6 reuses, 94-95% yield).
