Significance

The hydrogen-mediated reductive coupling protocols developed by this group represent a very nice means for the synthesis of important synthetic interemediates. Only 1 atm of H2 is needed and a catalytic amount of carboxylic acid is used to accelerate the reaction. Various ligands were tested, and tol-BINAP was shown to be superior. The synthetically useful compound is obtained with high enantioselectivity (91% ee).
