Congenital Oesophageal Atresia Discordant for Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula Occurring in a Set of Dizygotic Twins

Abstract

The authors present a set of female diamnionic and dichorionic twins with different blood types and congenital oesophageal atresia (EA) in both. Surgical management was successful. It can be assumed that EA with tracheo-oesophageal fistula in twin B occurred during an early embryological stage whereas the isolated EA in twin A was the result of a later event. To our knowledge, this is the first published set of dizygotic twins with different types of EA.

Les auteurs présentent un couple de jumeaux diamniotique et dichorionique avec différents groupes sanguins, et la survenue d'une atrésie congénitale de l'œsophage (EA) chez les deux. Le traitement chirurgical a été réalisé avec succès. Il peut être supposé que l'EA avec fistule trachéo-oesophagienne chez le jumeau B survenait durant un problème embryologique précoce, alors que l'EA isolé chez le jumeau A était le résultat d'un événement plus tardif. A notre connaissance, c'est la première publication d'un couple de jumeaux dizygotique avec différents types d'atrésie de l'œsophage.

Los autores presentan una pareja de gemelas diamnióticas y dicoriónicas de grupos sanguíneos distintos con atresia de esófago (EA) en ambas. El tratamiento quirúrgico tuvo éxito. Puede suponerse que la atresia esofágica con fístula traqueoesofágica en la gemela B ocurrió durante un periodo embriológico precoz mientras que la atresia esofágica aislada en la gemela A fue el resultado de un evento más tardío. Que nosotros sepamos es la primera observación sobre una pareja de gemelas dicigóticas con tipos distintos de EA.

Zusammenfassung

Wir berichten über ein Paar weiblicher diamniotischer und dichorionischer Zwillinge mit unterschiedlichen Blutgruppen sowie einer Ösophagusatresie (ÖA) beider. Die chirurgische Behandlung war erfolgreich. Es ist anzunehmen, dass die ÖA mit tracheo-ösophagealer Fistel bei Zwilling B infolge eines Ereignisses in der frühen Embryonalperiode entstand. Dagegen ist für die Entstehung der isolierten Ösophagusatresie bei Zwilling A ein späteres Ereignis anzunehmen. Nach unserer Kenntnis beschreiben wir den ersten Fall dizygoter Zwillinge mit unterschiedlichen Typen einer ÖA.
