Xylitol for Caries Prevention - Some Practical Aspects and GuidelinesPublication History
Publication Date:

Summary
Recent clinical studies suggest that a daily intake of 4-5 grams of xylitol is needed to benefit from the anti-caries properties of xylitol. Taken together, i) scientific, ii) economic, iii) compliance and iv) ethical aspects strongly suggest that highly concentrated chewing gums or tablets should be recommended 3 times a day after meal in order to facilitate and accomplish the advocated regimen. Thus, 5-minute chewing of 2 pieces in the morning, 2 pieces after lunch and 2 pieces in the evening can currently be regarded as an optimal adjunct to the daily exposure to fluoride in patients at risk for caries development.
