Michael Balint : His Theoretical Work in the Mirror of Medical Thinking

Zusammenfassung

Der Autor liefert einen Überblick über das theoretische Werk Michael Balints vor dem Hintergrund der Entwicklung der Psychoanalyse. Besonders hervorgehoben wird der Einfluss Balints auf die allgemeinmedizinische Praxis. Dieser Einfluss wird auch aus der Sichtweise anderer, nichtanalytischer Schulen der ersten Hälfte des Jahrhunderts beurteilt, sowie im Spiegel alter philosophischer Traditionen unterschiedlicher Kulturen betrachtet. Im Zusammenhang theoretischer Annäherungsweise und Erforschung der psychologischen Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen wird die Bedeutung der Konzepte von primärer Liebe, Elementarschuld, benigne und maligne Regression, Oknophylie und Phylobatismus (von Balint entwickelte Konzepte, die zwei Charaktertypen beschreiben), Kreativitätsebenen und besonders der Neubeginn, der der Kern und das Hauptziel jedes therapeutischen Ansatzes ist, diskutiert.

Abstract

The author gives an overview of the theoretical work of Michael Balint on the background of the development of psychoanalysis. He especially outlines the impact of the oeuvre of Balint on general medical practice. This impact is evaluated also from the point of view of some other, non-psychoanalytic schools of the first half of the century, as well as in the perspective of old philosophical traditions in different cultures. In connection with the theoretical approach to and research in the psychological development history of man the importance of such concepts as primary love, basic fault, benign and malignant regression, ocnophilia and phylobatism (concepts coined by Balint to describe two characterological types), levels of creativity and especially the new beginning, which is the essence and main goal of every therapeutical endeavour, are discussed.
