ABSTRACT

Transjugular intrahepatic protosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a widely accepted technique for the treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension. Other indications are the refactory ascites and Budd-Chiari syndrome. This technique, however, is not free of complications with clinical consequences. Faulty patient selection, poor operative technique and recurrent stenosis are the commonest impediments for a successful outcome. This article updates the TIPS procedure with a review of the literature and a description of the authors' experience in performing this technique.
