Abstract

From an āyurvedic perspective diseases of the kidneys can be classified into four large groups on the basis of their symptoms: 1. Syndromes marked by Dysuria, 2. Syndromes with Oliguria and Anuria, 3. Syndromes with changes in the composition of urine or polyuria and 4. Renal calculi. Apart from the specific disease the constitution of an individual has to be considered, too, in āyurvedic diagnosis. Āyurvedic therapy includes general and specific dietetic advice, special herbal therapy and if needed a course of cleansing therapies (Pañcakarma). In this overview these therapeutic strategies, some of which have proven to be effective in contemporary studies, will be summarily discussed.
