Durch Schichtarbeit verursachte Schlafstörungen und Müdigkeit können eine reduzierte Arbeitsleistung, Fehler bei der Arbeit sowie Arbeitsunfälle zur Folge haben. Absentismus, eine reduzierte Lebensqualität oder auch Depressionen sind weitere mögliche Konsequenzen. Außerdem kann Schichtarbeit in rotierenden Schichten einen Risikofaktor für verschiedene somatische und psychische Störungen darstellen und negative Folgen für den Gesundheitsstatus der Angestellten, insbesondere älterer Erwachsener und Frauen, haben.
