Schlaf stabilisiert und verbessert das Gedächtnis sowohl bei Erwachsenen als auch bei Kindern. Es kann im Schlaf zur Einsicht in logische Probleme kommen. Dies ist bei Kindern besonders ausgeprägt. Die Besserung des Gedächtnisses ist selektiv und betrifft vor allem emotional relevante und individuell bedeutungsvolle Informationen. Störungen des Schlafes können zu Gedächtnisproblemen führen. Ausreichend ungestörter erholsamer Schlaf ist für die Entwicklung der Kinder und deren kognitive Leistungsfähigkeit wichtig.
