Jede zwei Frau erlebt im Lebensabschnitt des Klimakteriums Symptome wie Ein- oder Durchschlaf störungen und unerholsamen Nachtschlaf. Ursächlich wird zumeist eine Störung der Schlafkontinuität durch die typischen Klimakteriumsbeschwerden wie nächtliche Hitzewallungen und Schweißausbrüche angenommen. Die genauere Sichtung der empirischen Studien zeigt jedoch, dass dieses einfache Kausalmodell zu kurz greift und von einer Vielzahl anderer relevanter Einflussgrößen überlagert wird.
