Significance

Nanosilica sulfuric acid (NSSA) was prepared as a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of 3-hydroxyphthalans via oxa-Pictet-Spengler reaction. Thus, the reaction of 3-hydroxybenzyl alcohols 1 and aromatic aldehydes 2 was carried out with NSSA under conventional heating and microwave irradiation conditions to give the corresponding 3-hydroxyphthalans 3 in 55-96% (heating) and 82-97% (microwave) yield.
