Offenes Foramen ovale – wann verschließen?

Einleitung
Das offene Foramen ovale (PFO) hat eine hohe Prävalenz, die in der Literatur mit 15 – 30 % der Bevölkerung angegeben wird. Als ontogenetisches Relikt hat es selbst keinen Krankheitswert. Allerdings liegen vielfältige Hinweise vor, dass sog. paradoxe Embolien aus dem venösen System insbesondere der unteren Extremitäten über das Foramen ovale in das arterielle System gelangen und dort Ursache thromboembolischer Ereignisse sein können. Besonders gefürchtet sind hierbei zerebrale oder seltene koronare Embolien.
