Significance

Zolpidem is a widely prescribed hypnotic for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It acts by binding to GABAA receptors at the same location as benzodiazepines. Alpidem, an anxiolytic drug that has been withdrawn from the market owing to liver damage, was also synthesized by the same route.
